Gastritis is the name used for a health condition that involves inflammation of the stomach lining. There are various types of gastritis, and they are caused by different factors.

For some people, their gastritis is just a minor illness that will disappear immediately after getting a treatment. However, there is some gastritis that can cause a higher risk of cancer. We don’t mean to scare you, but sadly it’s true.

Even though it’s rather common, you still shouldn’t underestimate the effect of gastritis to your body. Implement a regular diet

Implementing a healthy regular diet is essential if you want to control your gastritis occurrence. To do this, you can change the time of your meals and snacks. .You can also try to eat in smaller portions more frequently, rather than eating big portions at once. And when you don’t feel full enough in between your meal schedule, you can eat some healthy snacks throughout the day.

Eat healthy and fibrous foods

Besides controlling your eating portions and schedule, you should also take note of the foods that will be compliant to gastritis. Here is the list of foods you should eat and you shouldn’t eat if you have gastritis:

What to eat:

  • Beans and legumes (as tolerated)
  • Eggs, egg whites, or egg substitutes (not fried)
  • Seafood, shellfish (not fried)
  • Honey
  • Low-acid vegetables (cucumber, white potato, carrots)
  • Low-sugar, low-acid fruit (pumpkin, blueberries, strawberries, apples)
  • Mild, low-salt cheese
  • Oats, barley
  • Peppermint, ginger, turmeric
  • Plain, low-fat yogurt
  • Probiotic-rich foods (sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha)
  • Rice
  • Skinless lean poultry (chicken, turkey)
  • Whole grain bread and pasta

What to avoid:

  • Acidic fruits (citrus) and vegetables (onion)
  • Chocolate
  • Coffee and Tea
  • Corn and products made with corn (pasta, bread)
  • Dairy products
  • Energy drinks
  • Fatty/greasy food, fast food, spicy food
  • Fried or hard-boiled eggs
  • Garlic (small amounts as tolerated)
  • Ice cream, cakes, and pastries, baked goods
  • Marinades, salsa, mayonnaise, creamy sauces
  • Nuts and nut butter (small amounts may be tolerated)
  • Potato chips, packaged snacks
  • Processed meat (sausage, hot dogs), lunch meat
  • Red meat, duck, goose
  • Refined grains, fresh bread, pasta made with refined flour
  • Smoked meats
  • Soda, carbonated beverages
  • Soy products (tofu, soy milk)
  • Spices, herbs, seasonings (especially black pepper)
  • Tomato and tomato products (juice, paste, sauce)

Do not smoke and drink alcohol

Smoking and drinking alcohol has proved to be the biggest irritants for people who have gastritis. So it’s evident that you shouldn’t smoke and drink alcohol if you have it. But most experts will allow you to drink in moderation if your gastritis is not too bad. Most experts also give recommendations for women to limit alcohol use to no more than one drink a day and for men to have no more than two drinks a day. If you do this, then your gastritis occurrences can be decreased.
